Steve Arnold is a former Staff Sergeant who served sixteen years with the British Army’s 28 Engineer Regiment before his life changed dramatically in 2011, when he stepped on an IED while leading a search team in Afghanistan, resulting in the loss of both legs above the knee. During his rehabilitation he discovered hand cycling through Help for Heroes, eventually progressing into British Cycling’s development programme. Sport soon became more than just physical recovery for Steve — it offered direction, motivation, and a renewed sense of identity as he adjusted to life after injury. He went on to represent Team UK at the Invictus Games in London 2014 and later returned as Vice Captain for the 2017 Games in Toronto, taking on a leadership role that allowed him to support and encourage others on their recovery journeys. In recent years, Steve has continued to champion the Invictus community beyond competition, and most recently contributed his insight and experience as part of Channel 4’s commentary team for the Milano‑Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics, helping to share the stories of other athletes and highlight the power of sport in recovery on a national stage.
